The successful achievement of educational outcomes, which are set by Government and Catholic authorities, are supported at St Joseph’s through quality teaching and learning. To access the full range of educational opportunities and to achieve success, some students require additional support. This support may relate to disabilities or difficulties in a student’s learning and/or behaviour, regardless of the cause or circumstances. Students do not need to have a verified disability to access learning support.
At St Joseph’s, we take great pride in the high levels of expertise from the many dedicated teachers and school officers who work hard to achieve the best outcomes for all students. Staff are provided with high quality professional development to assist them in understanding and addressing the diverse learning needs of students.
Teachers have high expectations of our students, providing them with adjustments to support their learning needs, and rigorous and meaningful learning opportunities. Parents are also valued at St Joseph’s, and are part of the development and implementation of learning and support plans.
To meet the needs of all students at St Joseph’s we work under a three-tier intervention model. This model offers options of varying intensity that can be linked to the specific learning needs of students who are experiencing difficulties. To ensure that prevention and intervention strategies are provided in a timely manner and to students who need them, St Joseph’s has established a clear process for determining which students are experiencing difficulties, for selecting intervention strategies or supports, and matching these supports to students, and evaluating whether the intervention strategies are helpful to students.
We offer evidence-based and effective literacy interventions through our PreLit, MiniLit and MutliLit programs. Successful early years Maths interventions are provided through the RoleM program which caters for diverse learners, especially Indigenous and EAL/D students.
At St Joseph’s, we also work in partnership with the Student Services Team at Catholic Education Services, accessing specialist services, programs and resources. This enables us to offer the best of services to all students and their families.
St Joseph’s continually strives to find better ways to ensure that we meet the additional learning and support needs of every student in our school, in preparation for adult life.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6.
